Ladies in Karbala

Atika, the daughter of  Zayd ibn Amr ibn  Nufayl, was an Arab poetess  and a  beautiful  woman  of  great  wisdom  and  good  breeding.  She married Abdullah ibn  Abibakr ibn   Abiqahafe, or as Ibn Abd al-Barr wrote in Al-Isti’ab,his book,she married Zayd  ibn  Khatab. But he was  killed on  the  Day of Yamanah.

Her teknonym (Kunya) was Umm Abdullah and her mother was a bondwoman. Regarding her glory, it would be enough to say that she is the mother of the fifth Imam, Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (PBUH). There have been many wonders wrought by this respected lady including the following story which deceased Kulayni has written in his honored book “Al-Kāfi”:

Umm Wahab was one of the brave and devotee ladies who witnessed the sanguinary events on Ashura Day and the hardships of the Holy Prophet’s progeny. On their way to Karbala, Imam Husain (PBUH) and his companions saw a tent in Tha’labiyah desert. The Imam approached the tent and encountered Umm Wahab.

Mahallati writes: Ramla, the mother of Qasim ibn al-Hassan (PBUH), is one of the ladies who were in Karbala on Ashura Day. The presence of this respectful lady in Karbala is evident in the famous books on Ashura.

Haniyah (Abdullah ibn Umair al-Kalbi’s Wife) Just nine days after marrying, Abdullah (Wahab) and Haniyah joined to the Imam’s troop. They spent their honeymoon in Karbala among Imam Husain (PBUH) and his respectful family, and finally they martyred on the seventeenth day after they married.

Solomon (Sulayman), the servant of Imam Husain (PBUH), was born of Abu Razin’s marriage to Kabshah. Kabshah accompanied her master, Imam Husain (PBUH) to Karbala, and then she was return to Medina. It was an honor and the cause of prosperity for Kabshah and her son to be Aba Abdullah al-Husain’s servants. Her husband was also the companion of Imam …

Ruyha (Hani ibn Urwa al-Muradi’s wife) Mahallati writes: Ruyha was the wife of Hani ibn Urwa, the martyr of Kufa. Her son, yahya ibn Hani ibn Urwa was also martyred in the land of Karbala.
