Umm Wahab (Abdullah ibn Habab al-Kalbi’s wife)

Umm Wahab was one of the brave and devotee ladies who witnessed the sanguinary events on Ashura Day and the hardships of the Holy Prophet’s progeny.

On their way to Karbala, Imam Husain (PBUH) and his companions saw a tent in Tha’labiyah desert. The Imam approached the tent and encountered Umm Wahab.

The Imam’s behavior and his kindness towards the old woman, made her so enamored that after she told her son and daughter-in-law the story, they, who were already Christians, accepted Islam wholeheartedly and joined the Imam’s army. On Ashura Day in Karbala, Umm Wahab invited her son enthusiastically to the battlefield as if she wanted to fly her pigeon to the field. She urged her son to go to the battlefield and said: “O’ Son, I won’t be satisfied with you unless you go to assist the Prophet’s son and you won’t achieve the intercession (Shafa’ah) of Husain’s grandfather unless you make me satisfied.”

At last, Wahab, who went to the battlefield to assist his Imam, was arrested by the enemy. By the order of Umar ibn Saad, he was beheaded and his head was thrown towards the Imam’s army. Umm Wahab (whose name was Qamar) took her son’s head and embraced it. Wiping off the blood of his face, she said: “Praise be to the Lord for making me proud by your martyrdom!” Then she threw back the head towards the enemy. (She meant she wouldn’t take back what she had given in the way of God.)

After that Umm Wahab pulled out the pole of the tent, went to the battlefield, and killed two soldiers of the enemy. “O’ Wahab’s mother! Back to your tent. Your son is now before the Prophet of God,” said Imam Husain (PBUH).

She came back to her tent saying “O’ My Lord! Don’t frustrate my hope.” “O’ Wahab’s mother!” said the Imam “Your prayer was granted.”
