The Orphans’ Eve

The Orphans’ Eve

Under this very sun

All those tragic scenes of Ashura took place;

Under this very moon

Children of the martyrs wept for the loss of the previous night;

The three-year-old daughter of Husain asked her aunt Zeinab,

‘Where is my little brother Asghar who was crying for milk here last night?…

Where is my uncle Abbas who promised us water to bring?…

Where is my father who was with us last night?…

O, Allah! What will happen to us now?…

O, my aunt!

Couldn’t they just ask you for my earrings?

Look! My ears are bleeding…

Couldn’t they just ask father for his ring the way that man asked my grandfather Ali?…
