After arriving in Kufah, Muslim read the Imam’s letter to the people, at which they wept in joy.
Eighteen thousand people pledged allegiance to Muslim, after which he thus wrote a letter to Husayn, asking him to come to Kufah.
– “Eighteen thousand people, including the eminent personages, have pledged allegiance to you. Thus, if you wish, come to us.”
However, Umar ibn sa’d and a number of the supporters of the Umayyads, who were unhappy about the events in Kufah, wrote a letter to Yazid, informing him of what had recently transpired.
Upon receiving the letter, Yazid fired the governor of Kufah, appointing Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad in his place, with clear orders to arrest Muslim ibn Aqil.
– “There is only one man capable of pacifying the Kufians into obeying us. He is none other than Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad.”
Ibn Ziyad was a ruthless, merciless man, whose mother, Marjanah, was known for her promiscuity.
Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad arrived in Kufah in the company of only a few of his men. He went straight to the palace and took over the seat of power.
– “Be careful my Lord, we must not draw anyone’s attention.”
He arrested Hani ibn Urwah, a noble old man of Kufah, for sheltering Muslim. Hani was lashed and badly tortured.
When Muslim received the news of Hani’s arrest and was informed of Ibn Ziyad’s intentions, he asked his followers to prepare for battle.
– “Tell all those who have paid allegiance to Husayn to prepare for battle.”
Thousands of people gathered to fight ibn Ziyad. Muslim arranged his troops and appointed the commanders of his army. He hoisted the war flag for the chiefs of the tribes Kindah, Mid’haj, Tamim, Asad, and Hamdan.
A fierce battle broke out and soon the few soldiers of Ibn Ziyad were defeated.
Terrified, Ibn Ziyad fled to his palace and ordered all the doors shut and locked.
– “Shut all the doors and secure them.”
