martyrdom anniversary of Muslim ibn Aqil (PBUH) on Dhu al-Hijjah 9th

Muslim’s uprising was on Dhu al-Hijjah 8th. Muslim went to Taw’ah’s house in the area of Kindah tribe as a refugee. Taw’ah’s son, Bilal, who was thinking about receiving reward, gave Abdurrahman ibn Muhammad ibn Ash’ath this information. Abdurrahman told his father who was next to Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad this piece of news and Ubaydullah ordered the soldiers to arrest Muslim.

70 soldiers were sent to arrest him. Muslim was surrounded among the soldiers. He left the house and after a severe battle, he was injured. The soldiers were stoning Muslim. Then they set on fire by throwing bunches of reeds in flames on him. He fought again and this time he was arrested and was taken to Ubaydullah’s mansion. Muslim told Muhammad ibn Ash’ath, “Now that it’s no security, at least, on behalf of me, send a man to Husain (PBUH) to tell him not to come to Kufa.

Muslim was the first martyr of Karbala Revolution who recited epic verses (Rajaz). He was taken to Ubaydullah. At the door of Dār-ul-Imārah, Muslim asked for water. It was given to him but before drinking water, his incisors fell into the bowl of water. Muslim said, “Thanks God, that if it was of my own provision, I would drink it.”

After having several clashes with Muslim and insulting him, Ibn Ziyad ordered the soldiers to take him to the roof of Dār-ul-Imārah and behead him. Bakr ibn Hamran, who once was injured by Muslim’s sword, took him to the roof. Muslim praised the Lord and offered repentance. Bakr struck upon him a blow. That didn’t kill him. Muslim said, “Wasn’t it a revenge for my blow?” Bakr ibn Hamran struck another blow. Then he beheaded Muslim and dropped his corps in the shoe makers’ bazaar. (It has also narrated that Bakr fell his corps in ironsmith’s bazaar.)

It has been written that time of Muslim’s martyrdom had been on Dhu al-Hijjah 3th. Some has also reported that it had been on Dhu al-Hijjah 9th, on the Day of Arafa (the day before Festival of Sacrifice [Qurban]). The day of his martyrdom is said to be on Tuesday and more possibly on Wednesday.

Dezful Ashura Cultural Institution (D.A.C.I.) offers its condolence for the martyrdom anniversary of Muslim ibn Aqil (PBUH) on Dhu al-Hijjah 9th.
